Artist Statement

Miniature red-hot embers dance crazily up, up, upward into the night sky, becoming lost in blue star points of light. Another cedar log is tossed into the campfire, sending countless more red-hots upwards. The fire warms, as only a campfire can, and stories from grandfathers, uncles, and father continue well into the night; stories of elk bugling, antelope grazing, pheasants flushing, and bird dogs pointing. As a child, Candra could hardly wait to become part of that camaraderie and tell stories around campfires. Now as an adult, she is painting stories of my own outdoor experiences.

Candra's passion for the outdoors burns with a certain consistency in her life. Continuously, it influences her creative directions; paint or film. Perceptively, it represents something deeper than a visual; it paints a story of love and respect for the wilderness. Thematically, it is a deep emotional connection to the natural environment.

There is so much that the wilderness has to offer and as a wildlife artist, Candra wishes to execute that intensity and delicacy of the natural environment. It provides the audience a brief glimpse of a place that remains hidden from the industrialized world. There are some that will never be able to feel the warmth of campfires nor the wonderful experience of the great outdoors. Hopefully Candra's work draws them into an unharnessed wilderness, perhaps enough so they too will seek the serenity or raging raw nature for themselves. It’s this fundamentality that inspires Candra's creations; her stories that have now since earned a place around the campfire ring.
